Centre and Provinces Mobilize for Massive Water Storage Drive

Amid growing concerns over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sounded the alarm on Pakistan’s water security, urging authorities to fast-track the long-delayed Diamer-Bhasha Dam project. Addressing a jirga at the Corps Headquarters in Peshawar on Tuesday, the premier called for urgent inter-provincial consultations to boost the country’s water storage capacity and confront what he described as “India’s nefarious designs.”

“The Indus Waters Treaty guarantees every drop of water to the people of Pakistan—and we will defend that right with full resolve,” he declared, warning New Delhi of consequences if aggression continues. Stressing the need for unity and bold decisions, PM Shehbaz said it was time for the provinces to come together and craft a national water strategy to protect the country’s future.

Turning to economic matters, the prime minister addressed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s call for a new National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, pointing out that no fresh award has been issued since 2010. He confirmed that a federal committee has been formed and an NFC meeting is scheduled for August, with all provinces having nominated representatives.

In a significant assurance, the PM reaffirmed KP’s continued share of anti-terror funding from the divisible pool. He revealed that Rs700 billion has already been allocated to strengthen law enforcement, expand the Counter-Terrorism Department, and roll out safe city projects. “KP will continue receiving this support until terrorism is eliminated,” he vowed.

In response to CM Gandapur’s demand for greater inclusion of tribal districts in policymaking, the premier announced the formation of a separate committee to consult tribal elders, the KP governor, and the chief minister. Their recommendations, he said, would be formally presented in parliament for action.
