Pakistan Launches Nationwide Push to Bridge Skills Gap, Boost Employability
In a multi-pronged national effort, the Pakistani government is rolling out ambitious new programs aimed at aligning the skills of its youth with modern job market demands, addressing a critical barrier to economic growth. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced the launch of a landmark National Skill Competency Test for IT graduates. Developed with industry leaders, the free test will assess students in computing fields, offering top performers a joint industry certificate, academic credit, and placement in a national talent pool for employers.
This initiative complements a fundamental shift in how skill development is financed. Last December, the government launched the country’s first Pakistan Skills Impact Bond (PSIB), a Rs1 billion pilot that ties funding to measurable outcomes like job placement and retention, moving away from traditional input-based spending. The modern era is defined by skills. If you have skills, you will find employment, stated Federal Education Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui at a recent NAVTTC event, underscoring the government’s focus.
Simultaneously, efforts are expanding beyond formal education. The Ministry of Federal Education is driving non-formal education reforms, integrating digital literacy and launching awareness campaigns on social media to promote lifelong learning. International collaboration is also advancing, with Pakistan and Bangladesh recently agreeing to share best practices in vocational training and labour export.
